Microsoft 365 now available from new Brazil geography

Microsoft 365 is now available for organizations and enterprises from our new cloud datacenters in Brazil. This advancement in Brazil cloud infrastructure is one component of the Microsoft Mais Brazil plan, which also includes investments in skilling, employment opportunity discovery, and sustainability initiatives as covered in the October 20, 2020 announcement.

The new Brazil geography establishes Microsoft 365, the world’s productivity cloud, as available to Brazilian organizations with customer data stored at rest in Brazil for core online services, including customer content in Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business. Microsoft Teams chats, media, images, and meeting recording data will also be stored in-country.

This is the third new datacenter launch by Microsoft in 2020, continuing a series of datacenter openings with Germany and Norway this year, and United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Switzerland also coming online in the last 18 months. We will continue to extend the capabilities of our global offerings by delivering Dynamics 365 and Power Platform from Brazil in the first half of 2021.

In addition, Microsoft 365 Multi-Geo will be available from the new Brazil geography by Q1 of 2021. This service allows customers to configure the geographies where their Microsoft 365 user data is stored at rest, on a by-user basis, all within a single tenant.

Microsoft is continuously making new investments in local infrastructure in response to growing customer demand as more industry leaders choose Microsoft’s cloud services to further their digital transformations and respond to the remote-work shift caused by the Covid-19 global health crisis. The new datacenters offer Microsoft’s full featured global cloud offering, full connectivity to our global cloud network, with customer data stored at rest in Brazil for core online services. In addition, replication of customer data in multiple datacenters across Brazil gives customers reliable in-country services for business continuity in both pure cloud and hybrid scenarios. This provides our customers with trusted cloud services that help them meet local security, compliance, and regulatory requirements.

We see Brazilian organizations of all sizes and across all industries currently investing in new ways of empowering their employees with modern tools to enable secure, flexible, and mobile working that fosters collaboration. Microsoft 365 from the new Brazil geography is already seeing strong demand, especially with the new opportunity to store customer data at rest in Brazil for core online services.

The new Microsoft 365 geography in Brazil helps customers meet data residency obligations, which is particularly important in highly regulated industries such as financial services and public sector. This latest step will enable organizations and enterprises adopting Microsoft 365 to accelerate their digital transformation journey. The Union General Controller (CGU) is one of the initial customers embracing this opportunity in the Brazilian geography.

“With the Microsoft 365 availability at this new region being launched, the partnership with Microsoft is further strengthened, as it will allow us to store data in Brazil. This initiative comes at a moment when the digital transformation has become even more essential to enable quick and safe responses.”—Henrique Rocha, Information Technology Director, Union General Controller (CGU)

The new geography in Brazil is connected to Microsoft’s other geographies via our global network, one of the largest and most innovative on the planet—spanning more than 130,000 miles (209,000 kilometers) of terrestrial fiber and subsea cable systems to deliver services to customers.

With this latest development establishing a new Microsoft 365 geography in Brazil, Microsoft helps companies of all sizes to meet local security, compliance, and regulatory requirements—to drive innovation and realize the benefits of the cloud.
